We believe in helping others in our world and sharing what we have with those who are less fortunate. Orenco Church currently helps support two missionaries who are doing wonderful work in Africa and Ukraine. Below you will find more details about each of them, plus other missions we support seasonally and when disaster strikes. This Child Here
Robert Gamble, a Presbyterian USA pastor and founder of This Child Here, has been at work in Ukraine since 2006. Originally, in peaceful times, This Child Here worked with and for vulnerable youth in Ukraine. On his first visit there, he found them living in underground sewers, many were orphanes. During peaceful times, This Child Here's goal is "for every child, a family."
Now, during war time, we work with families displaced by the war in Ukraine. Thousands have fled the cities in the east. These families often consist of mothers and children (the men are fighting in the war.) We provide products from grocery stores and centers for activities. Through these activities, summer camps, and a supportive community, we offer therapy for the trauma and shock suffered in the war.
Village of Hope Uganda
One of our elders at Orenco Church, Becky Rios, is a volunteer missionary for Village of Hope Uganda. She has made several mission trips there, most recently in June 2023. Village of Hope provides safe homes, education, trauma counseling and spiritual guidance for former child soldiers and children orphaned through the effects of war and poverty. By the transforming work of Jesus, Village of Hope orphans will grow into self-sustaining, Godly ethical leaders in their communities and country. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA)
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is the emergency and refugee program of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. They focus on the long term recovery of disaster impacted communities, both in the U.S. and around the world.
Most any recent disaster you can think of, PDA has been there.
One Great Hour of Sharing
This offering, collected each spring, enables the church to share God's love with neighbors in need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed.
Operation Christmas Child
Since 1993, Samaritan's Purse has delivered shoebox gifts packed by caring people to more than 113 million people around the world through their Operation Christmas Child program. Each fall at Orenco Church, usually mid-October to mid-November, we collect gift-filled shoebox size bins to be sent overseas. Our goal is to collect more than 100 boxes each year.
You may work on your boxes throughout the year, filling them with small items and one special gift. For information on how to make a box, including items that are not allowed, look for "Operation Christmas Child" on Samaritan's Purse's website. Or, contact our church office.
